Southern Electric Southern Premier LeagueOld Tauntonians and Romsey 1999 Report by Ian TulkEighth place summed up a modest season for the newly merged OT's & Romsey, whose batting was strong but bowling a shade indifferent. Opening pair Charlie Forward and Mark Miller topped the 500 run mark, with Roger Miller 457 and Goan alrounder Peter Rodrigues 367 prominant. The team often got off to good starts, allowing Richard Rapley and Richard Taylor licence to strike! Taylor scored almost 200 runs at better than a run a ball. Left arm spinner Nick Wood captured the SL "best bowling" award for a third time with 7 for 29 against Havant and finished with 35 victims. Mark Miller bagged 25 and all-round "specialist" Richard Taylor 21. The high spots of the season were victories over Portsmouth (by 120 runs), Havant (by 170 runs) and at Liphook and Ripsley, where OT's & Romsey won by 5 wickets, chasing 262. No doubt about the low point - the early season defeat by Wellow and Plaitford, just a week after being smashed at Hungerford. The initial season of the OT's & Romsey amalgamation proved a great success, the second XI's late summer spurt to rid itself of relegation fears ensuring 2 sides in next years Premier League. | ||||||||||||||||||||
